The tools, processes, and skills that defined the industry for decades are being rapidly transformed by AI-powered development. Having worked with teams across different tech eras, I've been reflecting on what this means for our craft and how we should adapt.

The Changing Face of Software Development

Remember when Stack Overflow was the go-to solution for every coding challenge? When we'd spend hours scanning documentation and experimenting with different approaches? Today's workflow looks radically different:

Developers now start with a conversation rather than a search query. Instead of manually assembling solutions from documentation fragments, we prompt AI systems to generate initial code. Our role is increasingly focused on defining problems clearly, evaluating AI-generated solutions, and refining them into production-ready code.

This shift has profound implications. The mechanical aspects of coding are becoming commoditized, while the truly human elements – problem definition, systems thinking, and quality assessment – are becoming more valuable than ever.

The Looming Technical Debt Crisis

Every technological revolution creates its own form of technical debt. The rapid proliferation of AI-generated code presents a unique challenge: code that works but lacks cohesion, consistency, and context awareness.

This isn't merely academic. We're seeing a massive growth in generative AI projects and public code contributions. Each line represents a potential future maintenance burden if we don't develop proper conventions and standards.

For those who've experienced the legacy maintenance challenges of earlier eras (think COBOL in banking systems), the parallels are striking. Today's auto-generated codebases are becoming tomorrow's legacy burden – but at an unprecedented scale and pace.

Why Context Matters More Than Ever

In a world where code generation is increasingly automated, context becomes the crucial differentiator. AI models can produce syntactically correct code, but they struggle with:

Understanding the broader ecosystem in which code operates

Maintaining consistency with established patterns

Optimizing for long-term maintainability rather than short-term functionality

This is where human expertise remains irreplaceable. By providing rich context and establishing stronger conventions, we can guide AI tools toward producing more sustainable code.

The industry has been through similar evolutions before. Linux distributions, packaging systems, containerization – all represented efforts to standardize and provide context. Today's challenge is to develop similar conventions for the AI generation era.

Finding the Balance: Standardization vs. Innovation

The tension between standardization and innovation has always existed in software development. Too much standardization leads to stagnation; too little results in chaos.

In the AI era, this balance is even more critical. We need enough standardization to make AI-generated code maintainable and secure, without stifling the creative problem-solving that drives the field forward.

The sweet spot is what I call "sustainable progress" – an approach that establishes clear patterns and conventions while leaving room for innovative solutions when appropriate. This balance allows us to leverage AI's capabilities without becoming constrained by its limitations.

The Evolution of API Design

The history of API design reflects our ongoing search for better ways to connect systems. From SOAP to REST to GraphQL, each transition attempted to solve the problems of its predecessor.

Today, we're seeing the emergence of MCP and other similar initiatives such as Google's A2A– approaches designed specifically for the era of AI-to-AI and AI-to-human interactions. These protocols emphasize:

Rich context sharing beyond simple data transfer

Function calling capabilities

Standardized formats that work across different systems

Interfaces that are natural for both humans and machines

Security as a foundational principle, not an afterthought

This evolution isn't just technical - it reflects a deeper shift in how we think about system integration in an AI-powered world.

Rethinking Technical Interviews

The traditional technical interview – focused on algorithm memorization and syntax recall – made sense in an era where those skills differentiated great engineers from average ones. In today's landscape, they measure increasingly irrelevant capabilities.

When anyone can generate code on demand, what are we really testing? The more valuable skills involve:

Collaborative problem definition and solution evaluation

System design with real-world constraints

The ability to assess existing codebases and identify potential issues

Effective tool use when faced with unfamiliar problems

Progressive companies are already adapting their hiring processes to focus on these higher-level skills, creating opportunities for engineers who excel at systems thinking rather than just coding mechanics.

The Future is Bright (and Full of Work)

For newcomers to the field, today's rapid changes may seem intimidating. But they actually represent tremendous opportunity for those who understand where the industry is heading.

Software engineering is becoming more about actual engineering – applying principles to solve problems – and less about the mechanical aspects of code production. People who know how to "make things" and combine technologies effectively will thrive.

Similarly, those with strong product sense will find increasing demand for their skills. The ability to define what should be built becomes even more valuable when the "how" is partially automated.

And for experienced engineers? Don't worry – our jobs are safe. The massive increase in software production means equally massive growth in the need for maintenance, optimization, and integration. There's more than enough technical debt being generated to keep us all employed for decades to come.

Looking Ahead: Batch is Back

One fascinating trend is the resurgence of batch computing paradigms. After years of focusing on real-time systems, the computational demands of AI are driving a return to batch processing.

Unfortunately, many cloud providers haven't fully adapted to this shift, still focusing on selling high-margin products designed for previous computing models. The most interesting innovation is coming from newer players who understand the changing landscape.

Conclusion

The AI revolution isn't eliminating the need for software engineers – it's changing what we do and how we do it. By focusing on the uniquely human aspects of software development and developing better standards and conventions, we can harness these powerful new tools while avoiding their pitfalls.

The engineers who thrive in this new landscape won't be those who cling to old ways of working, but those who recognize which parts of the craft remain essential and which are being transformed. Both newcomers and veterans have a place in this future – as long as we're willing to adapt.

This piece was originally published in my Tech Diet Club blog on April 10th 2025 after the folks at DevOps BCN invited me to have a talk (hosted by InnoIT) about the future of software engineering in our rapidly changing landscape.

I would like to thank David Acacio, David Castañeda and the other folks at DevOps BCN for having me.

Thanks for reading Keep It Boring, for Now! With tech giants like Google and Apple rolling back their remote work policies, the spotlight is firmly back on our workspaces or lack thereof. Perhaps it's time to take a break from discussing AI and dive into a topic of utmost importance: the future of work. Many of us were thrilled when we swapped our 9-to-5 office routine for a flexible work-from-home model during the pandemic. But was it the lack of commute and freedom to wear sweatpants all day that we needed, or was it simply the flexibility that our factory-like mindset was preventing us from experiencing? Did we all hastily jump on the remote work bandwagon without considering its long-term implications?

Reflecting on my own experiences, some of my most significant contributions and problem-solving breakthroughs wouldn’t have been as substantial without a face-to-face discussion, a scribble on a whiteboard, or an impromptu chat by the coffee machine.

Embracing the Unforeseen

As the COVID-19 pandemic took the world by surprise, there was a rapid shift to remote work. Businesses were left with no choice but to experiment with this new work model. The ability to work from anywhere unlocked new opportunities, it democratized work across geographical boundaries. More people could now access job positions previously out of their reach due to physical distance or personal circumstances.

Additionally, remote work had a positive influence on employees' work-life balance. Long hours spent on screens led to a unique form of fatigue, termed 'Zoom fatigue,' named after the popular video-conferencing software. This new kind of exhaustion underscored the limitations of digital interactions and the profound need for human connection.

Team dynamics started to suffer from the lack of casual, face-to-face social interactions, making collaboration and innovation more challenging. Digital platforms, although continuously improving, couldn't fully replicate the nuances of in-person communication.

Further complications arose when aligning work and schedules across different time zones. Onboarding new joiners became a significant challenge as integrating them into company culture and workflows became difficult without face-to-face interactions.

Moreover, remote work has led to the blurring of boundaries between personal and professional lives. Work-from-home meant work was always present, leading to longer work hours, higher stress levels, and even burnout in some cases. The practice that initially seemed to enhance work-life balance gradually started to undermine it.

A Generational or Individual Trait Issue?

In the light of these challenges, it's worth pondering whether the success or failure of remote work is more related to generational attitudes, individual traits, or even professional roles. Research suggests a mixed picture.

Some studies indicate younger generations, particularly Gen Z and Millennials, are more comfortable with technology and thus more adapt to remote work. They appreciate the flexibility and autonomy it offers. However, they also value collaboration and face-to-face mentoring opportunities that an office environment can provide.

Conversely, older generations may find value in the structure and social environment of an office, yet they might also enjoy the lack of commute and the quiet focus time remote work affords. Indeed, it's a nuanced issue that doesn't adhere to strict generational lines.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Moreover, personality traits significantly influence how individuals react to remote work. Introverted employees might thrive in remote settings, as they could find the quiet, isolated environment more conducive to deep work. Extroverts, on the other hand, who gain energy from being around others, may find the isolation challenging.

The nature of the work itself also plays a role. For instance, roles that require significant collaboration or instant feedback might be more effective in an in-person setting. Creative brainstorming, especially, can be energizing in a room full of colleagues, where ideas bounce off each other in a way that’s hard to replicate in a digital setting.

Remote Work Isn't Impossible: It Just Needs the Right Approach

While these challenges are real, it's important to remember that remote work is not inherently flawed; rather, it requires the right approach. Several companies, particularly those who started as remote-first, have managed to overcome these obstacles. They had the advantage of developing processes, culture, and tools designed for remote work from their inception.

Studies have shown that well-structured remote work can lead to increased productivity, lower overhead costs, and even increased employee retention. Organizations need to invest in the right digital tools, create guidelines for virtual communication, and promote a culture that values flexibility and autonomy.

Further, training can play a crucial role in the successful implementation of remote work. Employees and managers alike need to be trained on how to work effectively in a remote setting - how to set boundaries, manage their time, maintain work-life balance, and use digital tools effectively.

Moreover, the success of large-scale remote projects, such as the Linux kernel development and countless open-source software, showcase that innovative, impactful work can be achieved remotely. The proliferation of these projects points to the importance of a supportive remote environment, robust digital tools, and asynchronous workflows.

The Great Balancing Act: Juggling Remote and Office without Dropping the Ball

As we grapple with the complexities of remote work, it's apparent that we are witnessing a critical moment in the evolution of work. It’s less about choosing between remote or office work, and more about finding a balance that incorporates the benefits of both.

Research indicates that many employees prefer a hybrid model, combining remote work with some time in the office. This model allows employees to benefit from the flexibility of remote work, while also providing opportunities for face-to-face interaction and collaboration. Companies that adopt this flexible approach can meet diverse employee needs and preferences, enhancing overall job satisfaction and productivity.

Additionally, organizational leaders need to rethink traditional work structures. The 9-to-5 work model is no longer be effective or desirable in our fast-paced, interconnected world. Work should be about achieving goals and creating value, not about being in a specific place at a specific time.

It’s also important to foster a culture of trust and autonomy. Managers need to trust their employees to do their work effectively, regardless of location. This requires a shift from evaluating work based on time spent, to evaluating work based on outcomes and deliverables.

Moreover, organizations need to invest in technology that facilitates effective remote work. This means more than just video conferencing tools. We need technology that facilitates collaboration, maintains security, and aids in project management. Furthermore, companies must ensure employees have access to the necessary equipment and a suitable work environment at home.

Investing in employee well-being is more important than ever. Remote work can blur the lines between personal and professional life, leading to overwork and burnout. Organizations should encourage employees to maintain a healthy work-life balance, providing resources and support where necessary.

Hybrid: Best of Both Worlds or Double Trouble?

As we contemplate the future of work, hybrid models, which combine both remote and in-office work, seem to be emerging as potential solutions. They promise the best of both worlds – the flexibility of remote work, along with the collaboration and social interaction of the office.

However, this approach isn't without its own set of challenges. There's a risk of ending up with the worst of both worlds, falling into the pitfalls of both remote and office work without fully benefiting from their advantages. For industries that have invested heavily in practices not conducive to remote work, such as short feedback loops and synchronous communication, it won't be an overnight switch.

The path to successful hybrid working will require us to learn from our remote work experience, redesign our work practices, and above all, remain adaptable to the changing needs of the workforce. The pandemic altered forever our perspective on what work can be. It’s up to us to shape what it should be.

Enjoyed reading this? Join my Telegram channel! It's merely an idea, an interpretation from one tech enthusiast.

A Future Beyond Apps and Websites

In the not-too-distant past, we witnessed a seismic shift when smartphones became a household necessity. Before that, services were primarily accessed via websites on our desktops or laptops. However, as smartphones came into play, they opened up a whole new avenue for interaction – mobile apps. Just like this transition, we're now on the precipice of another paradigm shift, one where AI takes the wheel.
<div class="digest-post-embed" data-attrs="{"nodeId":"5b7b4626-b1d7-432b-92bb-6c73f10b8e99","caption":"New technology generally achieves success when it's easy to convey the problem it resolves. In the app-centric world, you'd reach for your smartphone, open a travel app, and sift through options. But in our AI-forward future, your smart speaker is your concierge. Simply say, "Hey [AI], book a room for two in Barcelona next weekend," and consider it done.

Need to find a rare book? Rather than scrolling through an online library catalog, tell your AI, "Find 'Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind' at the nearest library and reserve it." The AI takes care of the rest.

This is the future we're looking at, where AI becomes our primary point of interaction for services we currently access through apps or websites. It's the next natural evolution of technology – a future that brings us not only convenience but also a level of personalized service that apps and websites alone cannot provide.

The Rise of APIs and the Importance of Standardization

As we become increasingly reliant on AI-powered 'robots' to carry out our tasks, two core components will emerge as the backbone of this revolution: APIs and standardization.

APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) are the universal translators for our AI allies. They let our AI assistants chat with different online services, making our transactions smoother and more efficient. Just as we need language translators to communicate effectively in foreign countries, APIs enable AI agents to interact seamlessly with a vast array of online services.

Meanwhile, standardization will be the crucial driving force in streamlining AI operations. Consider a scenario where you're using different AI assistants for various tasks - one for booking hotels, another for ordering meals, and yet another for managing your schedule. Each AI assistant working with a different set of conventions could lead to a chaotic and frustrating experience.

This is where standardization steps in, acting as the traffic rules of the AI world. By adopting a uniform set of conventions or 'rules', we ensure a harmonious coexistence of AI agents, enhancing their ability to serve us efficiently.

Standardization in data exchange formats is particularly beneficial for a few key reasons. Firstly, it promotes interoperability. When different AI systems follow the same data exchange format, they can communicate and collaborate, enhancing their usefulness.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Secondly, standardization can significantly reduce integration costs. Just as a single, universal charging plug would eliminate the need for multiple adaptors, standardized data exchange formats can simplify the process of integrating different systems, saving considerable time, effort, and money.

Finally, standardization can accelerate the adoption of AI technologies. With a common language and structure, businesses and developers can more easily adopt and integrate AI into their services, propelling us faster into the AI-driven future.

From UX to MX – The Evolution of Digital Interactions

When we hop onto our tech time machine and go back to the early days of the internet, we'll see a landscape where UX (User Experience) wasn't the high-stakes game it is today. Back then, companies didn't place as much emphasis on user experience. Functionality was king, and as long as a website or an app performed its task, it was considered successful.

However, as the digital space grew and competition ramped up, companies realized that merely having a functioning product wasn't enough. The user's experience, their interaction, and engagement with the platform became just as crucial, if not more so, than the product's functionality. Hence began the era of UX-focused design.

Fast forward to today, and UX has become a fundamental differentiator in the digital world. Companies invest heavily in things like A/B testing and user research interviews to perfect their UX.

A/B testing, for those not familiar with the term, involves testing two versions of a web page or app to see which performs better. It's like conducting a taste test to determine which recipe is more popular. The version that leads to better user engagement, conversions, or any other parameter of interest is then adopted.

User research interviews, on the other hand, involve getting into the minds of the users to understand their needs, desires, and pain points. It's akin to detective work, where companies uncover clues to create user-centric products.

These practices have become the norm because they work. They help companies make data-driven decisions, enhance user satisfaction, and ultimately, retain and grow their customer base.

Jeff Bezos — 'Our success at Amazon is a function of how many experiments we do per year, per month, per week, per day.'

But as we progress further into the AI era, a new kind of experience is stepping into the limelight: Machine Experience (MX). In an MX-centric world, it's not just about how humans interact with platforms but also about how AI agents interact with APIs. As AI becomes a primary interface for users, companies might soon compete on the quality of "machine experience" they offer through their APIs.

Just as UX revolutionized the way businesses approach their digital interfaces, MX promises to bring another wave of transformation, dictating the success of companies in the AI-driven era. The future belongs to those who can navigate this transition and perfect the art of MX. And just like the evolution from functionality to UX, the shift from UX to MX promises to be an exciting journey! 🚀

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Interacting with the Future – Welcome to Software 2.0

In recent times, we've seen a flurry of developments that indicate a significant shift in how we interact with technology. Today, we deal with browsers as our primary point of contact with the digital world. Tomorrow, we're likely to be interacting with AI agents in the same casual, everyday manner.

This new epoch is very much in line with the visionary concept of "Software 2.0," introduced by Andrej Karpathy (in 2017!!!). In the Software 1.0 world, humans wrote every line of code. But in Software 2.0, AI systems learn from data, modifying and writing their own software. This shift towards "learned" or "trained" software is akin to how we moved from command-line interfaces to graphical user interfaces. It's a fundamental change in how we interact with and shape our digital world.

So, what does this mean for us? The rise of AI Agents and Software 2.0 signals a future where our interaction with the digital world becomes more natural, personalized, and intuitive. It's a world where AI assistants, trained to understand our preferences and needs, take on tasks and responsibilities, making our lives easier and more efficient.

But as with all significant shifts, this transition brings both opportunities and challenges. Businesses will need to rethink their strategies and focus on the MX of their services. They'll have to create robust, well-structured APIs that can facilitate seamless interaction with AI agents. And most importantly, they'll need to navigate the nuances of standardization to ensure compatibility and interoperability across different AI systems.

All things considered, we're on the brink of an exciting transformation – a transition from a world dominated by apps and websites to one where AI agents and APIs reign supreme. The age of Software 2.0 is upon us, promising an unprecedented fusion of technology, artificial intelligence, and human experience.

The Tech Revolution: 10 Predictions about AI, Internet, and Possibly Our World in 3 Years

Here's What the Tech Ecosystem Might Look Like When You Blink Twice

David Poblador i Garcia

In the wake of engaging discussions with my good friends Blixt and Luis, I felt inspired to gaze into the crystal ball of technology. Their insights sparked my curiosity, leading me to the daunting yet fascinating task of forecasting the near future.

As someone who has witnessed first-hand the sweeping transformations brought about by the internet rollout, the rise of Linux, the birth of cloud computing, the advent of smartphones, and the explosion of social networks, I now venture into the realm of forecasts for the next big leap - the evolution of Large Language Models (LLMs) and Generative AI.

But remember, when it comes to my predictions, I'd advise taking them with the proverbial grain of salt. I'm the same guy who, back in 1999, boldly declared that a company with a quirky name like Google would never make it. This isn't just wild guessing - it's extrapolation from current trends and an attempt to peek into a future that's just around the corner. So, strap in and join me as we delve into the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.

1. LLMs will become as essential and omnipresent as your morning coffee

Picture this - a world where Large Language Models (LLMs) are as widespread as smartphones today. These artificial intelligence entities will become the ultimate interface for knowledge interaction, rendering conventional search engines almost obsolete. Instead of scouring through countless articles, abstracts, and papers to quench your knowledge thirst, you'll engage in intuitive conversations with an LLM, leveraging its capability to provide elaborate, nuanced, and context-appropriate responses. Every query, whether it's about the culinary culture of Vietnam or the latest advancements in cancer research, will be a chat away, blurring the lines between human-computer interactions.

2. Prepare to see LLMs breaking free from the shackles of the (online) internet

As technology evolves, our reliance on the internet for non-real-time knowledge will diminish. In no time, most LLMs will function offline, freeing us from the shackles of constant internet connectivity. Just as we download software updates on our devices, these LLMs will receive periodic updates, allowing them to stay abreast with the ever-evolving world. Imagine having the collective knowledge of humanity accessible from your device, anytime, anywhere, even in the remotest corners of the Earth - a veritable library of Alexandria in your pocket.

3. Specialized Generative AI will eclipse the era of one-size-fits-all AI models

Generative AI models will no longer be Jacks-of-all-trades. Instead, they will develop into specialists, proficient in providing in-depth insights into specific domains. From arts to sciences, business to sports, these AIs will cater to every niche. Just like selecting a channel on your TV, you'll choose the AI best suited for your current need. The future isn't far off when you'll summon a culinary AI to perfect your béchamel sauce, or a history AI to explore the socio-political undercurrents of the French Revolution.

4. Wave goodbye to Client-Server Computing as powerful personal devices steal the show

The traditional client-server computing model, the backbone of the digital world, will recede into the shadows. As companies like NVIDIA and Qualcomm continue to enhance device capabilities and devices become more powerful and LLMs more advanced, the need to reach out to distant servers to fetch knowledge will vanish. With AI powerhouses residing on our devices, data processing and knowledge generation will happen right where we are, turning each device into a personal knowledge hub.

5. Get ready for a new birth of innovative monetization as advertisers take on the offline shift (or suffer)

In a world where interactions predominantly happen offline, the traditional revenue channels of online advertising will face a drastic overhaul. The billion-dollar industry of online advertisements will be challenged to either find a way to transition offline or risk obsolescence. As LLMs shift from being data consumers to data producers, the onus of revenue generation will fall upon innovative monetization strategies that align with the new AI paradigm. Ad giants like Facebook and Google may need to devise innovative offline monetization strategies that align with the AI-driven paradigm shift.

6. In the time of AI partnerships and enhanced APIs, browsers will no longer be your go-to

The future is ripe for a seismic shift in how we interact with service providers. Complex tasks like hotel bookings, restaurant reservations, or organizing shipments will no longer involve browsing multiple websites. Instead, users will interact with enhanced APIs that collaborate with their locally running AI models. This AI-powered approach will not only streamline operations but also augment the overall user experience, making it more personalized and efficient.

7. Expect a new marketplace for AI integrations - a one-stop-shop for all generative AI needs

We'll see the emergence of an extensive marketplace for AI integrations. This marketplace will serve as a hub for offline core services, specialized model downloads, and real-time service interactions. Just like how app stores revolutionized software distribution, this marketplace will democratize access to AI capabilities, enabling users to enrich their personal AI models with specialized skills and functionalities.

8. The internet is due for a makeover: less corporate monotony, more personal expression

With the fading significance of corporate websites, the internet will transform into a more personal space for expression. As AI-powered interfaces gain prominence, the internet will revert to a more user-centric model, reminiscent of its early days. But this time, it will be bolstered by advanced AI capabilities that provide users with a more personalized and enriching experience.

9. The race for edge computing will become the next frontier for tech dominance

As AI continues its march towards the edges of networks, device manufacturers and operating system builders will find themselves on the frontlines of this new battleground. Companies like Microsoft and Apple that understand the value of the 'edge' and have computational advantages may find themselves in a favorable position in this new landscape. The race for dominance in the new age of computing will not be just about who has the most data, but also who controls the edge.

10. Content creators are set to become the new knowledge trailblazers in the AI landscape

Content creators will find new avenues in the AI era, enriching LLMs with their specialized knowledge. Traditional content like research papers, novels, technical documentation, and more, will be transformed into downloadable forms for enriching LLMs. This evolution will empower content creators to reach a wider audience, allowing their expertise to permeate through the global knowledge ecosystem via AI interfaces.

As I began penning down this article, I was convinced that the transformation I was about to predict would unfold over the next decade. A vision of the future that would materialize slowly but surely. However, the more I delved into the nuances of these technological advancements, the faster my estimated timeline contracted. Midway through, I found myself looking at a mere 5-year horizon. And by the time I reached the end, I had further shortened the time frame to just 3 years. Yet, even as I write this conclusion, I can't help but question whether I've still been too conservative. Could it be that this breathtaking transformation, reshaping AI, the internet, our world and possibly our reality, is poised to occur even faster? Only time will tell. But one thing is clear - change is coming, and it's coming quicker than we think.

Thanks for reading Keep It Boring, for Now! During my 10 wonderful years living in this relatively small Nordic country, I couldn't help but feel a growing admiration for its incredible contributions to the world. This appreciation only intensified after I moved to another country, giving me a newfound perspective on Sweden's outsized impact on the global stage. Inspired by this realization and a recent chat with my good friend Diana, I decided to write this post to explore how Sweden has managed to create such powerful ripples in the world.

From the humble zipper and the adjustable wrench to the life-saving pacemaker and the music streaming service that changed the way we listen to our favorite tunes, Sweden has consistently punched above its weight in innovation. But there's even more to this nation than just ingenious inventions and catchy pop songs. From their top-notch education system to their commitment to social equality, we'll explore the factors that have fueled Sweden's remarkable success story.

The Education Buffet - Where Learning is as Rich as a Smörgåsbord

Sweden's education system is like an all-you-can-eat buffet for knowledge seekers, but let's not pretend it's all sunshine and rainbows. Sure, from early childhood to university, the focus is on fostering creativity, critical thinking, and a love for learning. There's also a strong emphasis on digital skills, which helps to churn out some of the world's best and brightest minds.

However, it's not all smooth sailing in the land of educational opportunity. One hiccup is the growing concern about the gap between high-achieving students and those who struggle academically. This inequality is a reminder that no system is perfect and that Sweden needs to work on ensuring that all students get the support they need to succeed.

Another messy aspect is the somewhat controversial experiment with for-profit schools, which has been met with mixed results. While some argue that these schools create more choice and competition, others worry about the potential for inequality and the commodification of education. It's a contentious issue, and one that Sweden continues to grapple with.

Despite these hiccups, the Swedish education system remains a force to be reckoned with. Its emphasis on fostering creativity and innovation has certainly played a significant role in the country's success. However, it's essential to keep an eye on the issues within the system, lest they overshadow the accomplishments it has achieved.

The Startup Greenhouse - Nurturing Innovation from Seed to Success

The Swedes have created the perfect conditions for startups to thrive, but how does their startup scene compare to other countries with different safety nets? In Sweden, there's a strong social safety net that allows entrepreneurs to take risks without fear of losing everything. Government support and a culture that encourages innovation make the startup sauna even hotter.

Now, let's take a look at the United States, a country with a less comprehensive safety net. While it might seem counterintuitive, this seemingly less favorable environment has also managed to foster innovation. The reason? High stakes and an almost "sink or swim" mentality can drive some entrepreneurs to push themselves harder and take bigger risks. In the US, success stories like Apple, Google, and Amazon have emerged from this high-pressure environment.

So, what can we learn from these two contrasting models? Sweden's startup-friendly environment, with its strong social safety net, fosters a spirit of exploration and creativity. This supportive atmosphere allows entrepreneurs to experiment and iterate without the constant fear of failure. On the other hand, the United States' more cutthroat environment has proven to be a breeding ground for ambitious entrepreneurs who are willing to bet it all on their ideas.

Both systems have their pros and cons, and both have produced their fair share of successful companies and innovations. What's important to note is that there isn't a one-size-fits-all recipe for startup success. Different environments can encourage innovation in their own unique ways, and aspiring entrepreneurs can find inspiration and opportunities regardless of their surroundings.

In conclusion, I believe that a strong safety net, like the one in Sweden, has proven that a cutthroat environment isn't the only way to foster innovation. A supportive and nurturing atmosphere can encourage individuals to take risks and explore new ideas without the constant fear of failure. Sweden serves as a shining example of how a nation can create a thriving startup ecosystem while also prioritizing the well-being of its citizens. By learning from the Swedish model, we can work towards a future where innovation and compassion go hand in hand, allowing for a more inclusive and sustainable approach to progress.

The Social Equality Smoothie - A Taste of Progress with a Dash of Challenges

Sweden's commitment to social equality is the cherry on top of their secret sauce, but like any good recipe, it has its complexities. The Swedes believe that everyone, regardless of background, should have an equal opportunity to contribute to society. This level playing field means that talent doesn't get overlooked, and everyone has a shot at making their mark. However, achieving true social equality is an ongoing process, and Sweden still has work to do.

One of the areas where Sweden has made significant strides is gender equality. The country consistently ranks among the top in global gender equality indices, thanks to policies like generous parental leave, affordable childcare, and initiatives to promote women in leadership positions. This commitment to gender equality not only benefits individuals but also helps to create a more diverse and innovative society.

However, Sweden also faces challenges when it comes to integrating immigrants and refugees into the workforce. While the country has a long history of welcoming people from diverse backgrounds, there is still a gap in employment rates between native Swedes and those with a foreign background. This discrepancy highlights the need for continued efforts to improve integration and promote equal opportunities for all members of society.

Sweden's progress in social equality is commendable, but it's essential to recognize that the journey is far from over. By continuing to address the remaining challenges and striving for a more inclusive society, Sweden can ensure that its secret sauce of success remains a potent blend of innovation and equal opportunity for all.

The Global Mindset Cocktail - A Tall Drink of Awe and Inspiration

During my time living in Sweden, I was frequently amazed by the people's global mindset. It seemed that Swedish people often did not see their borders as the end of their world. Instead, they embraced the idea of expanding their horizons, both literally and figuratively. Many Swedes I encountered were well-traveled and open to working beyond their local limits, which certainly contributed to the nation's innovative spirit.

This international outlook is reflected in their education system, where students are often encouraged to learn multiple languages and participate in exchange programs. As a result, Swedish students grow up with a broader perspective and a deeper understanding of other cultures. This cultural curiosity often continues into adulthood, as Swedes eagerly explore the world and work with people from diverse backgrounds.

This global mindset is also evident in the way Swedish businesses operate. Companies like Spotify, Ericsson, and Volvo have expanded their reach far beyond Sweden's borders and established themselves as global players. This willingness to engage with the international community not only boosts Sweden's economy but also allows them to import ideas and best practices from around the world.

In my experience, the Swedish approach to life and work truly embodies the spirit of a global mindset cocktail – a blend of curiosity, openness, and a desire to learn from others. This thirst for knowledge and understanding extends beyond their national borders and allows Sweden to maintain its position as a formidable force in innovation and cultural trends.

So there you have it - the secret sauce of Sweden's success is a potent blend of a top-notch education system, a startup-friendly environment, social equality, and a global mindset. If the world wants to learn a thing or two from this tiny but mighty nation, it's time to get cooking with these ingredients. And who knows? Maybe the next world-changing innovation is just one Swedish meatball away.

To help other countries become more relevant in the international landscape, here are some key lessons from Sweden's success story:

Prioritize education: Focus on fostering creativity, critical thinking, and a love for learning at all levels of education. Encourage digital skills and lifelong learning.

Support startups: Create a nurturing environment for entrepreneurs with a strong social safety net and government support for innovation.

Strive for social equality: Work towards a more inclusive society by addressing inequalities and promoting equal opportunities for all, regardless of background.

Cultivate a global mindset: Encourage international collaboration, openness to other cultures, and a willingness to learn from the best practices around the world.

Address challenges head-on: Continuously work to improve the system, tackle inequalities, and strive for progress, even when faced with complex issues.

As we say "adjö," let's take a moment to appreciate Sweden's unique recipe for success. With a dash of å, a sprinkle of ä, and a hearty helping of ö, this small Nordic nation has cooked up a smörgåsbord of innovation that continues to delight and inspire the world. So, raise your glass (or a plate of kanelbullar) and toast to Sweden's remarkable achievements. Skål!

By embracing these principles and learning from Sweden's example, countries can make significant strides towards becoming more innovative, inclusive, and influential players on the global stage.

The Unappreciated Art of UX in Low-Level Software

Decoding the Unspoken Rule of Abandoning User Experience at the Core

David Poblador i Garcia

Welcome back to another edition of "Keep It Boring, for Now"! We'll examine the barriers to entry caused by subpar UIs and propose that the key to future success lies in making complex tasks simple. So, buckle up, and let's grumble our way through some tech-skepticism and UX revelations!

The Troubles of Troubleshooting

We've all been there – spending countless hours sifting through logs and debugging code, all because of a lousy interface. Poorly designed interfaces make troubleshooting insanely difficult, leading to frustration and wasted energy. But it doesn't have to be this way. A well-designed UX can make even the most challenging tasks feel effortless, and it's high time we start demanding better experiences for our low-level software.

An effective UX relies on clarity, ensuring that users understand the actions they need to take and the impact of those actions. Confusing interface elements or a lack of organization can cause users to make mistakes or overlook essential information. Unfortunately, many low-level software tools present cryptic error messages that only add to the confusion. By focusing on clear, concise, and informative error messages, we can facilitate quicker resolutions to problems and minimize the stress of troubleshooting.

The Domino Effect of Incidents

A single UI mishap can lead to a chain reaction of incidents, costing businesses valuable time and money. It's time we take a step back and evaluate how a better UX can prevent these catastrophes. By focusing on clarity and simplicity, we can reduce the chances of human error and improve overall system reliability.

The more complex a system, the more likely it is for human error to occur. By simplifying the UX, we can reduce the chances of mistakes and, in turn, minimize the risk of costly incidents. This involves streamlining workflows, minimizing the number of steps required to complete a task, and providing clear, concise instructions and feedback throughout the process.

Effective feedback loops are crucial to minimizing incidents caused by poor interfaces. Providing users with real-time feedback on their actions can help them understand the consequences of their actions and identify potential issues before they escalate. This approach is particularly important in low-level software, where small errors can have significant repercussions. Implementing robust feedback mechanisms can help prevent incidents and maintain system stability.

When incidents do occur, it's essential to learn from them and improve the UX to prevent similar issues from happening in the future. By collecting data on incidents and analyzing the root causes, we can identify areas where the UX could be improved. This continuous improvement process helps ensure that our low-level software becomes more user-friendly and reliable over time.

Lost in the Logging Abyss

Poor logging is the bane of every engineer's existence. It's like trying to find a needle in a haystack, but the haystack is on fire, and you're wearing oven mitts. An intuitive and comprehensive logging system can save hours of time and reduce the risk of overlooking critical issues. Isn't it time we put an end to the madness?

Visualizing log data can help users identify trends, patterns, and anomalies that might otherwise go unnoticed. By presenting data in a graphical format, we can make it easier for engineers to understand the bigger picture and make more informed decisions. Incorporating visual elements like graphs, charts, and heatmaps can drastically improve the user experience and facilitate quicker issue resolution.

Troubleshooting often involves collaboration between multiple engineers or teams. A well-designed UX should facilitate this collaboration, making it easy for users to share log data, annotations, and insights with others. This might include features like shareable links, integrated communication tools, or even the ability to export data in a user-friendly format. By fostering collaboration, we can improve the overall effectiveness of our troubleshooting efforts.

Barriers to Entry, Lowering the Learning Curve

The complexity and poor design of many low-level software tools create barriers to entry for new engineers. It's like a secret club with a complicated handshake that only a select few can master. Simplifying the UX of these tools will not only make them more accessible but also foster a more inclusive and diverse community of engineers.

Improving the UX of low-level software means making it easier for newcomers to learn and understand the tools they're working with. This might involve better onboarding, providing clear documentation, or even offering interactive tutorials. By lowering the learning curve, we can make these tools more approachable and encourage a broader range of individuals to explore the world of low-level software.

A significant part of simplifying UX involves breaking down complex processes into manageable, understandable steps. This means taking the time to analyze workflows and identifying areas where confusion or frustration may arise. By streamlining these processes and providing clear guidance throughout, we can demystify the complexity and make low-level software tools more accessible to a wider audience.

By making low-level software more user-friendly, we can foster a more diverse and inclusive engineering community. This diversity brings with it fresh perspectives and innovative ideas that can drive the field forward. Improving the UX of these tools is not just about making them easier to use; it's about creating an environment where everyone can contribute and thrive.

Shining Examples to Follow

Fortunately, some tools are showcasing the power of user experience in low-level software. It's clear that prioritizing user experience is crucial for success. By learning from the examples set by trailblazers like Tailscale, Ngrok, Cloudflare, and Backstage, we can start to reshape the way we think about and approach the design of infrastructure products.

The benefits of a well-designed UX in low-level software are numerous: reducing troubleshooting time, minimizing incidents, improving logging, lowering barriers to entry, and fostering a more diverse and inclusive engineering community. These advantages can lead to increased productivity, reduced costs, and ultimately, happier engineers.

We need to expand our horizons and consider the impact of new technologies on the UX of low-level software. For example, the rise of AI and machine learning could play a significant role in enhancing the user experience, automating complex tasks, and providing more intuitive interactions. By keeping an open mind and exploring innovative approaches, we can continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in low-level software design.

In the end, the success of future infrastructure products will hinge on their ability to make complicated tasks achievable in a simple and enjoyable way. By embracing the power of great UX, we can set the stage for a new era of low-level software that is not only powerful and efficient but also a pleasure to use.

And who knows? With a little effort and a lot of empathy for our users, we might just create a world where engineers working closer to the metal can finally enjoy the same polished experiences as their counterparts in higher-level software domains. It's time to redefine the status quo and elevate the UX of low-level software to the level it deserves.

ChatGPT Uprising: Time to Panic or a Chance to Reinvent the Wheel?

Making the Most of Our AI Overlords and Rethinking Our Work-Life Balance

David Poblador i Garcia

In the ever-unfolding world of technology, the rise of large language models (LLMs) like GPT has triggered quite the controversy. The debate is raging: are these statistical marvels a blessing or a curse? Will they propel humanity to new heights or plunge us into the abyss of obsolescence? And as we quibble about their worth, are we missing the bigger picture?

The conversation has largely revolved around two primary concerns: the trustworthiness of LLMs in making "smart" decisions and the potential job displacement they might cause. It's no secret that LLMs have already demonstrated their ability to augment our work in various disciplines – from law to software engineering to healthcare diagnostics. It's as if we're living through the steam engine revolution all over again, but this time, it's fueled by bits and bytes.

But let's hit pause on the panic button for a moment. In a previous article, we discussed how the rapid pace of change can be both thrilling and terrifying. The question we should be asking ourselves now is: can this be the catalyst for a fundamental reimagining of the way we work and organize companies?

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

1. Time to Rethink Work

The crux of the matter is not whether artificial intelligence can replace many of our tasks; rather, it's about realizing that maybe some good ol' human intelligence could have helped us better direct our energies. The fear of ChatGPT and AI displacing human jobs has overshadowed the real issue at hand: are we even organizing our work and companies efficiently in the first place? Perhaps we've been stuck in a rut, clinging to outdated structures and processes that have long outlived their usefulness. ChatGPT, with its statistical prowess, can shed light on the areas where human efforts are inefficient or redundant.

Instead of viewing ChatGPT as the enemy, we should treat it as an ally in our quest for a more optimized and intelligent approach to work. By analyzing and understanding the tasks that these models can effectively perform, we can reallocate our human resources to areas that require more creativity, empathy, and critical thinking – traits that are still uniquely human.

2. Redirecting Our Focus

The debate around LLMs often gets bogged down by questions of job displacement and trustworthiness, yet we're missing out on the bigger picture. What if, instead of fearing AI, we shift our focus towards the question of how we can use these technologies to create a more fulfilling work experience and a more productive society?

For instance, LLMs can help us streamline communication and collaboration within companies by automating mundane tasks like scheduling meetings, drafting emails, or even providing instant translations. This would free up valuable time and energy that we can then invest in solving more complex problems or nurturing interpersonal relationships within the workplace.

Moreover, as LLMs continue to evolve, they may become valuable partners in the creative process. By providing us with vast amounts of information and insights, they can spark new ideas and innovations that we might never have conceived on our own.

By redirecting our focus towards the potential benefits of LLMs, we can work alongside these technologies to build a more effective, efficient, and ultimately, more satisfying work environment.

3. Work-Life Rebalance

As we consider the possibilities of integrating LLMs into our work and organizations, we should also contemplate how these technologies can help us achieve a better work-life balance. As AI takes on more routine tasks, we'll have the opportunity to reevaluate our priorities and redefine what meaningful work truly entails.

Imagine a future where reduced work hours become the norm, allowing us to dedicate more time to our personal lives, families, and passions. With the implementation of a universal basic income, financial stability could become a reality for more people, reducing the stress associated with economic uncertainty.

Moreover, LLMs can help simplify bureaucratic processes and remove duplicities, making our interactions with institutions more streamlined and less time-consuming. By taking advantage of these innovations, we can begin to design a world that values quality of life as much as productivity.

4. Embracing the Future

It's natural to feel apprehensive when faced with the rapid pace of technological advancements. However, fear alone is an unproductive response to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. Instead of resisting change, we should strive to embrace the potential of LLMs and other emerging technologies.

To make the most of the future, we need to foster a mindset of adaptability and continuous learning. By staying informed about new developments and cultivating the skills needed to thrive in an increasingly automated world, we'll be better positioned to navigate the uncertain terrain of the tech landscape.

Furthermore, we should encourage open dialogue and collaboration between various stakeholders – including industry leaders, policymakers, and educators – to ensure that the benefits of AI and LLMs are accessible to all. By fostering an inclusive approach to technological progress, we can work collectively to shape a future that benefits everyone.

In essence, embracing the future means embracing our capacity for growth, innovation, and collaboration. By tapping into the potential of LLMs and other cutting-edge technologies, we can create a world that is more efficient, productive, and fulfilling for all.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

In summary, the rise of LLMs like GPT provides us with a unique opportunity to reassess our priorities and restructure the way we work and organize life. Today, we're diving into the realm of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT and pondering whether they might be the new steam engines of our time. My friend Emil, who's usually as cautious as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs, swears by this idea. So let's delve into this intriguing concept and examine how quickly these tools are being adopted compared to the rise of the steam engine during the Industrial Revolution, and what that could mean for the future of our society.

The steam engine took centuries to become truly ubiquitous, revolutionizing industries, transforming transportation, and changing the very fabric of society. It fueled the Industrial Revolution, which brought about unprecedented economic growth and an improved standard of living for many. But the rapid rise of LLMs like GPT, Stable Diffusion, and DALL-E might just outpace it. The question is, can we brace ourselves for the impending changes as we once did with the steam engine, and what might these transformations mean for the future of work, bureaucracy, and human time expenditure? Will we see a wave of job displacement, or perhaps a renaissance in creativity and innovation as we offload mundane tasks to our digital assistants? And how will these developments shape the disciplines of software development and artificial intelligence in the years to come?

Join us as we navigate this fascinating topic, exploring the potential consequences of widespread LLM adoption and envisioning the possible future that awaits us in a world where ChatGPT and its brethren have become as indispensable as the steam engine once was.

Job Displacement: A Necessary Evil or a Blessing in Disguise?

When faced with the potential of job displacement, many are quick to panic – and rightly so. But before you start packing your apocalypse survival kit, consider the possibility that this shift might be an opportunity to redefine where we spend our time as humans. Looking back at the Industrial Revolution, we can see that the world experienced a similar period of upheaval. Many manual laborers were displaced as steam-powered machines took over tasks previously performed by human hands.

While the transition was undoubtedly painful for many workers, it ultimately led to a world that was more efficient and productive. The displaced workforce eventually found new employment opportunities in emerging sectors, such as factory work, and the overall standard of living improved. It wasn't all sunshine and roses, of course – crowded cities, pollution, and social inequality became prominent issues of the time (still present today). However, society ultimately adapted and evolved, paving the way for technological advancements that have shaped our modern world.

So, in the face of job displacement due to LLMs, we might find ourselves in a similar position. Though the initial impact may be unsettling, it could lead to the emergence of new industries, roles, and opportunities that we can't even fathom today. Maybe all this displacement will simply help us unload some of the burdensome bureaucracy that's been weighing us down, allowing us to focus on more fulfilling and meaningful pursuits. It's worth remembering that with every great change comes great opportunity – and maybe a dash of chaos to keep things interesting.

The Repetitive Task Wake-Up Call

LLMs could serve as a stark reminder of just how much time and energy we've been wasting on unnecessary repetitive tasks. With the rise of these models, we're forced to confront the inefficiencies that have been lurking in our daily lives – from the workplace to government institutions and beyond. If we're truly committed to simplifying the bureaucracy on our planet, we ought to embrace this wake-up call and allow LLMs to strip away the mundanity, freeing us to focus on tasks that truly matter.

<picture></picture>

<g>

</g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

In the workplace, for example, LLMs can automate mundane tasks such as scheduling meetings, sorting emails, or generating reports, ultimately increasing productivity and reducing stress. Moreover, by taking over repetitive, time-consuming tasks, LLMs give employees the opportunity to develop new skills, explore innovative ideas, and pursue more fulfilling roles within their organizations. The ripple effect of this shift could be felt across industries, leading to a more creative and dynamic workforce.

Governments, too, could benefit immensely from the simplification brought about by LLMs. Streamlining bureaucratic processes such as permit applications, tax filings, and legal document generation would not only save time and resources but also improve citizens' experiences with public services. By reducing the red tape, LLMs could help make public institutions more accessible, transparent, and efficient.

Finally, on a personal level, LLMs might encourage us to reevaluate the way we allocate our time and energy. As repetitive tasks become increasingly automated, we can shift our focus to more meaningful pursuits – be it spending quality time with loved ones, engaging in creative hobbies, or volunteering for causes we're passionate about. By shedding the burden of unnecessary repetition, we have the chance to redefine what truly matters in our lives and create a more purpose-driven society.

The Great Boilerplate Reduction

With the widespread adoption of LLMs, disciplines like software development could be in for a major shake-up. We may very well see a reduction in boilerplate code, as these models help generate code more efficiently, streamlining the development process. As a result, the job of the average software developer might shift toward more creative and innovative aspects of software design.

Freed from the tedium of writing and maintaining repetitive code, developers could focus on crafting unique user experiences, creating novel algorithms, and solving complex problems that require human ingenuity. They may find themselves collaborating more closely with other professionals, such as UX designers, data scientists, and domain experts, to deliver highly tailored solutions for specific industries or user needs. In short, the role of a software developer could evolve to be more about envisioning and architecting the big picture, rather than getting lost in the code.

As LLMs continue to advance, we might witness a significant shift in the way software is developed. Abstractions could become more intelligent and efficient, allowing developers to focus on high-level problem-solving rather than getting bogged down in the minutiae of coding. This new era of development might give rise to novel roles and responsibilities within the field.

For instance, developers could become more specialized, concentrating on mastering particular LLMs and their applications in various domains. They might also find themselves acting as "AI trainers," responsible for fine-tuning and optimizing the performance of LLMs to suit specific tasks or industries. Moreover, with a greater emphasis on high-level design and problem-solving, software developers might increasingly need to hone their soft skills, such as communication, collaboration, and empathy, to better understand and meet the needs of their clients and end-users.

In summary, the job of the future average software developer may look quite different from what it is today, with new value-adding duties stemming from the changes brought about by LLMs. While some may argue that this transformation could lead to the loss of traditional coding skills, it's worth considering that the evolution of the software development landscape might ultimately result in a more innovative, agile, and people-centric industry.

Thanks for reading Keep It Boring, for Now! Lately, some well-known companies have started questioning whether it makes sense to go all-in on cloud environments. Many of these advancements have indirectly helped design more robust software. There are many practices that have become common in cloud-native environments, such as CI workflows, modern monitoring stacks, automated deployments, and microservices. The improvements they have brought to software development productivity have been transformational.

The Risks of Cloud-Native Environments

One of the significant risks of cloud-native environments is the risk of cost spiralling out of control, particularly in organizations without strong technology maturity. It's easy to spin up new environments and forget about them, leading to runaway costs. Cloud providers often use complex pricing models that can be challenging to understand, and unexpected spikes in monthly cloud bills are common. Overoptimizing for cloud-native environments can also lead to increased complexity, vendor lock-in, performance issues, security risks, lack of flexibility, debugging issues, longer development cycles, decreased team productivity, and lack of standardization.

Security is also a significant concern, with many companies not fully understanding the risks associated with cloud-native architectures. Containerization can introduce new security vulnerabilities, making it essential to adopt proper security practices. Additionally, multi-tenant environments can pose new risks around security and performance if proper isolation mechanisms are not in place.

Simpler Primitives as an Alternative

Instead of going all-in on cloud-native environments, businesses can consider using simpler primitives as an alternative. For example, rather than using complex containerization, businesses can use simpler virtual machines or serverless architectures. Is there such a thing as a Google syndrome in which organizations feel that having a powerful technology stack like Google's will make them successful? What a great fallacy that is! Are we all technologists suffering from a severe FOMO that is making us invest too much in unnecessary rearchitecturing because we want to be running the latest cool software pieces?

Cloud-native architectures offer many advantages, but they also come with significant risks and costs. As someone who has worked in this industry, my thoughts go out to those who are in stressful situations due to financial issues or immigration visa statuses. It's important to acknowledge the difficulties that people are facing, but it's also essential to examine the root causes of these problems.

For those of us who have worked for so-called "hyper-growth" companies, the recent events should come as no surprise. We've seen this trend coming for a long time. While it's difficult to understand all of the macroeconomic factors that influence how companies grow, shrink, or pivot, one thing is clear: the true startup mentality is different from the hyper-growth one. One of the most common measures of success is headcount growth. Unfortunately, hiring lots of new employees can create inefficiencies, harm company culture, and reduce productivity. When hiring becomes the only tool to get the job done, it can detract from the most important things, like focusing on priorities and managing the company's lifecycle.

This situation is not easy to escape, as there are few actors in the system who have an incentive to stop it. On the contrary, not playing by these rules can make your team or yourself look bad, and in some cases, affect your career progression and your team's perception. This highlights the importance of prioritization in the context of hyper-growth. By focusing on what's important and managing the company's lifecycle effectively, businesses can achieve sustainable growth without sacrificing their culture or productivity.

The best way to avoid that situation is to avoid it from the get go. Just a few days ago I read this refreshing take on how to run a business and innovate by the Teenage Engineering CEO:
<div class="twitter-embed" data-attrs="{"url":"https://twitter.com/DevMoore/status/1614758737633476608","full_text":"Literal quote from Teenage Engineering’s CEO and their philosophy: ","username":"DevMoore","name":"Dev","profile_image_url":"","date":"Sun Jan 15 22:57:38 +0000 2023","photos":[{"img_url":"https://pbs.substack.com/media/FmjGgsVaEAAhXf0.jpg","link_url":"https://t.co/FWENnhmp1L","alt_text":null}],"quoted_tweet":{"full_text":"Biggest mystery of the past decade is Teenage Engineering 1) *not* being Acqui-hired by the FAANGs 2) not being able to scale as a challenger brand in mainstream lifestyle tech. \n\nGuessing they could have, and chose not to (integrity choice?). When people comprehend the advantages a novel technology provides, they're more inclined to adopt it. This clear understanding accelerates the growth of the technology, paving the way for additional innovations. The simplicity of explaining the issues addressed enables developers, investors, and users to rally around a technology, fostering its expansion.
